A POW is coming home, ’nuff said!

Look, there’s no question that the 5 Taliban that were released most likely be redeployed to attack in Afghanistan. We’re told that we don’t negotiate with terrorists only other nation-states we have gone to war with, which I suspect isn’t entirely true. The Taliban maybe terrorists, but we haven’t been in a conventional war since our reaction to 9/11. And of course now we are hearing that this POW should have an asterisk to his name because he may have gone AWOL or sent some critical emails to his parents about American policy, as if to say “you swapped 5 really bad guys for this guy?”

The folks complaining about this simply highlights that no matter what President Obama does it will always be wrong. Going back to even W’s administration, there was repeated attempts to get Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl freed. We even lost 5 men trying to rescue him. If they had executed him and sent the video out on it, the same people today complaining about the swap would be decrying that the President did not do anything to free him. And instead of showing Bergdahl’s parents (his father growing a beard until his son was released) with smiles on their face all over the news because their son is finally coming home, Fox News would have them weeping on one of their shows asking why nothing was done or being goaded to say how Obama failed here.

Regardless of whether he was or was not a deserter. Regardless that 5 enemy combatants were swapped, which by the way countries all over the world like Israel have done for decades. The fact is this….one of our own, a POW, is coming back home. Let us hope we can bring the rest home as well. Whatever opinion you may have about President Obama, one of our own is coming home!

Another move step closer in me losing love of Obamacare

Accenture replaces CGI for troubled Obamacare site

Thursday, January 16, 2014

CGI Federal has been replaced as the lead contractor for the Obamacare enrollment website by Accenture after a series of setbacks.

The Accenture contract which will replace CGI Federal’s contract after it is scheduled to end on the28th February, has been valued at £58 million.

The HealthCare.gov portal which failed to function after becoming overloaded by visitors, provides enrolment services to the public, as part of the U.S. government’s nation healthcare reform plans.

Accenture Federal Services chief executive David Moskovitz, said: “Accenture will bring deep healthcare industry insight as well as proven experience in building large-scale, public-facing websites to continue improving HealthCare.gov.”

The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which supervised the launch, said: ““As CMS moves forward in our efforts to help consumers access quality and affordable health coverage, we have selected Accenture to become the lead contractor for the HealthCare.gov portal, and to prepare for next year’s open enrolment period”.

In the past few months I helped 4 people get plans. I dealt with their crap website. So far, only 1 person even was contacted by the insurance providers. When the Affordable Care Act passed, I approved the concept, having dealt with private insurers who have screwed me and family and friends in the past. I grudgingly approved of the mandate, which goes against my civil libertarian ideals  because I’ve seen a lot of people either unable to get insurance get financially burned using the ER or simply decided to not get insurance even if they could afford it and pass on the cost to others. As a disabled person, I approved of pre-existing conditions portion of the law. The law was based on Nixoncare, Romneycare and Swisscare and what the Heritage Foundation proposed; the Swiss had it for almost 20 years and from what I can tell is highly successful (it is still slightly different than Obamacare and Romneycare).

Saying all that, the legislation has a lot of problems. While I personally would have preferred a single payer system or a “public option” or at least some kind of system that had univesal coverage. But we didn’t get that, we got what conservatives proposed in the past. It is what it is. But, then I see here something like this, that our tax dollars are being used for firm who will outsource the labor overseas. The website may have been done this way as well. Look, if a private firm wants to outsource to an offshore location, hey it is their money. But when it comes to utilizing OUR tax dollars, I want the work kept inside our borders! Between the half ass follow through by insurers/system after signing up to now this, I most likely will have to re-think my support for Obamacare. It probably doesn’t matter what I think, not like it has any impact. But still man, it ain’t right that our tax dollars be sent overseas for work that could have been done here. And don’t even get me started on how even when it is done here, a lot of software firms are utilizing H1-B visas to bring in workers from India. How many coders here are looking for work? There are Americans who are easily as qualified who could have coded for that damn website. But no, American tax dollars for foreign workers. Madness..I tell you..pure madness.

Let this be the start of a peaceful road to Damascus

I’m hoping that Syria does follow through with this diplomatic windfall. Honestly, if the Russians want to take credit, fine by me. As Jon Stewart noted, if this succeeds we will have avoided a military conflict, then it is a win of some sort. The poor civilians in Syria, sadly, will still have to face the horror of civil war, but it is their fight and not ours.

Could Syria cheat? Perhaps, but you really can’t hide such a scam like that anymore. And the regime in Damascus would be truly stupid to try and make Russia look like a fool. But if they follow through, then at least those stuck in the crossfire will not face the horrors that the President asked us to watch on Youtube.

It is pretty telling how many, mainly on the right, are saying that this Russian/UN move is some how a loss of face for President Obama. They’re such a Janus, with one face saying how they would not support any military action, while with the other decrying that American “respect” or what have you is nullified with the refusal of using military force. This is complete hogwash. Anytime peaceful means could be used, even if it means granting credit to an ally or rival, is a face saver for the US. How? Because we avoided using American men and women to kill other people on foreign soil.

Watching the President tonight, I hope he marks the end of our last war.

While I have a good idea of what the President is going to say tonight, I’m going to try and catch his televised speech. I sure hope he announces we are going to be bringing our troops home soon. Frankly, this war machine needs to begin to tone down. Yes the situation is tricky over there, but you know what, its tricky here. We can’t afford a defense industrial complex budget that approaches $1T. Secure what needs to be secured over there so that we don’t have to go back en mass, but its time to start the peace.

Just imagine if we focused on our country with the ferocity we have applied towards our military engagements. Focusing on building new roads and bridges in Boston and Kansas City versus Baghdad and Kandahar. Did you know that our nice neighbors to the north have a more robust electrical grid than we do? Did you know that we could put almost 90% of those out of work in construction and construction related fields into a job buy focusing on our bridges, roads, new schools, and sewers? This doesn’t just have to be a government-only project. I’m just saying that our focus has been off for a while now.

My 5 second rant on Afghanistan.

Can we not accelerate our withdrawal from Afghanistan? We got bin Laden (thank you, President Obama). al Qaeda is practically vaporized in that country. And the Taliban are actually being openly courted by Kabul, so what’s the point? Those folks do not want a modern country! We have no business playing nation building. Its time to quit risking lives and money on this adventure in the land of poppy.

Much ado about nothing with Romney and firing

OK, I’ve seen this Romney video clip of him talking about firing. I don’t understand what the big fuss is about? Who here hasn’t fired a company providing crappy services before? Who hasn’t switched mobile phone providers? What about cable television providers? The same with employers, why should they retain someone who is not doing their job? I’m not a Romney supporter, but holy crap, what he said isn’t exactly blasphomy. We’ve all done it.
